Tom Brok
A history of the island
Upstalsboom Hotel tom Brok - our previous hotel name - had a close connection to the island of Langeoog. With the new brand identity also came new logos and new names, with which we want to make the Upstalsboom self-image more visible in all our hotels. This is supported by the symbol that has been created in the logo, together with the image of his sensitivity, his feelings and his actions. It forms the central element in our new image. We put people at the centre of everything we do and rethink holidays. The solidarity of all Upstalsboom hotels with this idea is reflected in an appearance that is as uniform as possible. That's why our hotel is now called Upstalsboom Langeoog.
And what about the exciting history of tom Brok and the island of Langeoog?
During the Frisian chieftaincy from 1350 to 1464, Langeoog, like the other East Frisian islands, belonged to the domain of the tom Brok family - the first East Frisian chieftain family ever.
Originally from Brookmerland near Aurich, with little land and from quite modest circumstances, the family was able to quickly and skilfully expand its sphere of influence and grew to become the largest and most influential chieftain family in East Frisia. It was under them that the East Frisian land was completely united for the first time. The tom Brok family is particularly well known for its ties to the privateers of the Vitalienbrüder, who at the time were roaming the North Sea.
Chief Widzeld tom Brok provided the legendary pirates under Johann "Klaus" Störtebeker with a safe harbour, shelter and business in East Frisia. They in turn helped him to defend Frisian freedom against the Count of Holland, Duke Albrecht of Bavaria, by ravaging his ruled coastal areas. It was also Widzeld Tom Brok who finally mentioned the island of "Langeoch" in a document for the first time in history.
